Since 2001, the price of electricity in Wallonia has risen from about €0.10/kWh to over €0.40/kWh. Meanwhile, the cost of lithium-ion batteries has dropped from nearly €1,050/kWh to around €200/kWh.
In other words, electricity prices have quadrupled, while storage costs have dropped fivefold. However, storage costs seem to have bottomed out, indicating that now is the opportune time to invest.
These two curves crossed around 2023: this is when storage becomes economically attractive.
Today, a battery allows a household with solar panels to:
- Consume up to 70% of its own production
- Reduce grid dependence
- Stabilize billing against price increases
Key trends:
- Decrease in lithium price since 2016
- Increase in electricity price since 2001
- Evolution of battery profitability versus grid injection
